I have started a new project. The research, testing and prototype are being developed until July, supported by the development grant from AFK.
The concept “urban metabolism” is used to describe the inflows of matter and energy into a city, and the waste streams that come out of it.
It envisions a city as a living, breathing, moving, eating and excreting organism. This is a metaphor used by urban planners and designers, but which I envision very differently:
Since urban metabolism is an underground system, there is a chance for it to fossilize. There is also a chance that it will be interpreted at some point in the future.
At that moment, the remains of the urban metabolism will describe humans and their culture as a collective, organized and creative species.
I will build an installation with glass and other materials, which describes the human collective as an organism which will fossilize.
As guidance and inspiration I am using the construction maps from the Amsterdam city archives. The image bellow is an example of those.
